What it Feels Like to Obtain Citizenship

“It is like a dream, like when you are drowning and all of a sudden someone saves you.”

Esther Garza poses with her children after becoming a U.S. citizen. Help us prepare more new citizens by making a contribution today.

Those words were spoken last week by LUPE member Esther Garza when she and other LUPE members were celebrated for achieving U.S. citizenship. Esther is one of almost 300 immigrants that LUPE helped achieve citizenship this year.

“You feel that peace, that happiness, that tranquility, to walk, to dream, to say, here’s my family, we are free.”

That is what it means to obtain U.S. citizenship for the millions of immigrants currently living in the U.S. While millions of immigrants have no viable option to fix theirs immigration status, the people that do have an option can rely on LUPE to help them through the process.

Help us continue to help immigrants reach the American Dream. Donate $5 to LUPE today. Continue reading

Sign the Petition: Shame on you Rep. Blake Farenthold!

50% of your District is Hispanic and yet you refuse to support a pathway to citizenship in the Senate Immigration Reform bill and you are willing to hand over $46 billion in PORK to defense contractors!

Petition Background

So many hardworking immigrants who have helped build our homes, construct and maintain our roads and bridges, and have taken care of our children, continue to live in fear. As Texans – more than any other State – we must work for fair and humane immigration reform which begins with a path to citizenship. Anything less is flat out immoral and inhumane after all they and their families have invested in our State.

More on the devastating amendment:

The Corker-Hoeven amendment will be voted on today and would double the number of Border Patrol agents on the U.S.-Mexico border (the majority coming to the RGV), build and fortify 700 miles of border fencing, and extensively invest in surveillance technology and equipment, including 18 aerial drones.

The Border Network for Human Rights, the Southern Border Communities Coalition, the ACLU of New Mexico Regional Center for Border Rights, and the Northern Borders Coalition released a statement that begins:

“This is a bad deal for U.S. taxpayers, but especially for those that live and work in the border region. While the flow of migration is at a historic low, excessive enforcement remains unchecked and unaccountable to communities in which Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection operates. This proposal to increase enforcement without checks and balances is an example of excessive and wasteful government spending and represents an unnecessary expansion of the federal government’s authority.”
