Donna – The road to strong communities is paved by strong leaders. LUPE leaders Manuela Luna and Rosie Tijerina are paving the way for strong colonias in Hidalgo County Precinct 1.
Rosie Tijerina has been fighting for 10 years to get streets fixed in her Donna-area colonia Goolie Estates. The unpaved roads caused dust to go into people’s homes, causing health and nuisance problems for colonia residents. Recently that fight bore fruit.
Last month, residents from Rosie’s colonia as well as Alamo-area colonia El Jay met with recently-elected Commissioner A.C. Cuellar and received a response right away. El Jay received a colonia clean up and Goolie got their street fixed. LUPE leader Manuela Luna helped Rosie and other residents of Goolie Estates to identify a course of action to solve their problem, and together they organized the meeting with the commissioner.
This is a great example of how, when leaders get involved with LUPE and learn how to organize their colonia, they become teachers, helping other colonias to organize as well. This way, LUPE leaders are paving the road to strong colonias and strong communities.
