Right wing lawmakers have wasted no time filing their anti-immigrant, anti-Latino legislation. The Texas Tribune reports:
A slew of bills filed Monday includes measures that would sanction businesses that hire undocumented workers, require state agencies to report on the costs of providing services to illegal immigrants and allow police to check an individual’s immigration status on “reasonable suspicion.”
State Rep Debbie Riddle (R-Tomball) was the first to introduce legislation for the new session. Her HB 17 is SB1070 copycat legislation. State Rep Dan Flynn (R-Van) introduced HB 81, which would prohibit state agencies from using any public money to print non-English documents or signs.
Fear about our nation’s economic future and anger with the political and economic status quo has empowered these anti-immigrant, anti-Latino politicians. But their bad bills won’t do anything to put this country back on the right track. They punish the bad guys–those decent, hard workers who take care of our kids and build our houses–while letting the real culprits–US elites, corporate lobbyists and the politicians they have bought–off the hook for the nation’s ills.
But the Reform Immigration for Texas Alliance is preparing for the fight against whatever the anti-immigrant camp will try to throw our way. Representing 8 regions of Texas and over 100 community, labor, and faith organizations, RITA is poised to mount a considerable organizing effort against these bad bills.
