President Obama signs proclamation honoring Cesar Chavez

Yesterday, President Obama met with the Chavez family, UFW President Arturo Rodriguez & co-founder Dolores Huerta to sign a Presidential Proclamation honoring Cesar Chavez and the legacy of farmworker organizing for worker justice.

From the UFW

While this is a significant gesture and exciting news, we are still voicing the need for a national holiday to honor Cesar Chavez on March 31st. From a great article on Cesar’ legacy, Dick Meister writes:

A national holiday would be a well-deserved tribute, not only to Chavez, but also to Latinos generally, to organized labor and to all those who do the hard, dirty and dangerous work that puts food on our tables.

We are hopeful that this proclamation could help the movement to make March 31st a national holiday! But we need your help…
